There are lots of reasons to be married al fresco, and you don’t have to be limited to the hot summer months! With contingency plans, you can tie the knot in the great outdoors during any time of year (yes, even winter). Here are some things to consider:

  • Just the Right Time

Last weekend I attended a wedding as a guest. This is something I do maybe once every ten years, so I was quite surprised by the ceremony. I arrived at 5:45 p.m. for a 6 p.m. ceremony, with drinks and hors d'oeuvre around 7 then dinner maybe half an hour later. But, as the ceremony rounded the forty minute mark, I found myself wishing for an energy bar. Twenty minutes after that, the couple was, at last...married. The ceremony was an hour long!

I love small weddings. An intimate ceremony of forty or fewer affords possibilities that just can't happen in a large gathering. When you have a small wedding your guests can be more than an audience--they can be a part of the celebration. The small acts done in the course of the ceremony are typically designed to give thanks or receive blessings and are much more meaningful in a more intimate group.

  • Weather or Not

Photography by Cameron Ingalls - see more at www.cameroningalls.com

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, the weather is as fickle as the proverbial finger of fate. After several glorious sunny, hot days the forecast called for the return of the fog that cools San Francisco and the cities around the Bay. I left my house in the East Bay, dressed in my summer officiant attire (a sleeveless silky dress) and headed across the bridge to Golden Gate Park. There I am, sitting in freeway traffic wondering if I'll make it on time. I gaze across the Bay and see an enormous fog bank rolling in over the city. By the time I reach the site, the temperature has dropped at least twenty degrees. I'm greeted by the happy groom in his three-piece suit, while the lovely bride looks like she just emerged from a walk in freezer.

It's official. Same sex marriages will be legal in California starting June 17, 2008. This is a big milestone for the community and I say "It's about time!" I've had the opportunity to photograph several commitment ceremonies and these events are extra special to me. There’s always an immense outpouring of emotional support from friends and family and it's always very moving.

  • Last Minute Changes

You finally find the perfect site for your ceremony, and it's available on the day you've selected. As the two of you look around excited by the possibilities, you can just picture the ceremony. The chairs will go in the green meadow, the altar will be on the foot bridge that crosses the stream, all the flowers will be in bloom and the sun will be shining. Your wedding will look just like the magazine photo you have tacked to your wall.

  • It's the Season

Photography by April Greer - see more at www.aprilgreer.com

Spring has arrived. Here in the San Francisco Bay area, Mother Nature has presented us with a stunning array of plants and flowers. The daffodil, poppy, tulip, magnolia and iris compete for attention with the flowering plum trees that line each block. It's a beautiful time to have a garden wedding. And (not to rub it in) the temperature has hovered around 70 degrees lately. It’s the perfect weather for an outdoor ceremony.

    Shades of Green
Making their mark in 2007, Green Weddings have lead the way for 2008 trends. The spring and summer seasons are the perfect time to celebrate this top spot trend. An abundance of flowers and fruit fill the markets giving brides the advantage of buying local. Outdoor venues like gardens, meadows, farm lands and lake settings make for a beautiful natural backdrop for Eco-friendly ceremonies. And though donations made in honor of your guests are popular as green wedding favors, eco-friendly favors are also a great alternative, as you'll read later.

  • Wed in Sin...City That Is!

Photography by John Michael Cooper - see more at www.altf.com

Regardless of the notorious ties it has to the Mafia or the brothels right outside city limits and that it’s simply referred to as "Sin City," Las Vegas is still one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world. But what is it that makes couples want to vow a lifetime of commitment to each other in this outrageous city?
