The economic crunch has affected many brides and grooms planning their wedding, and cutting (out) the extravagant cake seems to be a popular way to keep a few bucks in the pocket. According to The Wedding Report, the average cost of a custom created cake in 2008 is nearly $550. And mind you, that is a basic buttercream frosted cake. No fillings, exotic flavors, artsy icing, none; just cake.
A growing trend in the cake department, is the "fake cake." A beautifully decorated tiered stack of styrafoam disguised to look like the real deal. Though a small piece of it is real for the cake cutting ceremony. But, serving it's photographic and theme fitting purpose on a cake table, it is an attractive alternative, especially for renting one at $150.
"My true love is to decorate cakes (real or fake)," says Kimberly Aya, creator of cakerental.com! She found that brides and grooms were asking her for the "fake cake" as a way to save money. Aya thought is was a great idea and now has a collection of fake cakes ready to rent. Custom cakes can be ordered for a bit more, but not as much as the cost of a real cake.
And don't worry, your guests will still be served cake. Real cake from sheet cake that's sliced in the back for the servers to bring out. Sheet cake of a delicious flavor undecorated..still yummy..but cheap!
So, if you think that you can financially benefit from using a fake cake, by all means, go for it!
Happy wedding Planning!
