Last Minute Changes

You finally find the perfect site for your ceremony, and it's available on the day you've selected. As the two of you look around excited by the possibilities, you can just picture the ceremony. The chairs will go in the green meadow, the altar will be on the foot bridge that crosses the stream, all the flowers will be in bloom and the sun will be shining. Your wedding will look just like the magazine photo you have tacked to your wall.

Sometimes dreams do come true and the ceremony you envision will unfold exactly as you imagined.

Then there are those other times. It just may be that Mother Nature brings a wedding surprise of a rain shower, wind storm, or fogbank. Or you may discover that blossoms you saw on your spring visit to the site have fallen by mid-summer.

I recently worked with a couple who were getting married in their own back yard. You might wonder how an unexpected event could possibly arise in that situation. But, something did. The couple neglected to turn off the automatic sprinkling system and the yard was soaked. The garden area that was planned for the ceremony had new swamp-like features that would be sure to soak footwear, pant legs and dress hems. In the hour before the guests arrived, we were able to devise a solution. The alternative not only worked, but in the long run, was even better than the original plan.

There will always be last minute changes. It's great to have a vision and a plan, but it's also important to have flexibility and a sense of humor. No matter what happens, the event of your marriage is what will truly be remembered.
