Last week, we were reminded of how much it really does matter to show your MIL that you care for her. Up next is…
Mistake #3: Don’t Compliment Her Often Enough
Your MIL can be self-conscious just like you are. Handing her son over to you and having you in her life is a difficult transition. She needs to know that she is still noticed and appreciated. It’s probably no surprise that age is probably one of the most common roots of competition between mothers and daughters-in-law. After all, we are women. And we do care how we look and how we are perceived, even just a little! Try to help her feel good about herself.
Solution: Simple. Compliment her!
Make sure you let her know how pretty, thin, healthy, or young she looks. You don’t have to lather it on too thick but a good compliment never hurt anyone. You still want to sound and truly be genuine. Nobody likes a brown-noser. Try to make a point to remember what she wears and let her know she looked good! Remember, you are younger and hipper than she is which may be a possible cause of resentment if she is showing you attitude. Make it a goal as the younger woman to make it known that she hasn’t lost her flair.
