What Has he Done For You Lately?

When I get an inquiry for my services from the groom-to-be, I am always impressed. Overall, grooms tend to be less active in the wedding planning process. Let's face it, the wedding industry is largely catered towards brides. However, men can and should contribute more…and we’re not talking about money. There’s plenty of work and fun to go around.

Take Laura & Gus for instance. About 3 months ago, I received an email from Gus. Within moments of our first conversation, it became clear to me that he was no slouch. Not only had he and Laura carefully discussed the style and aesthetic of their wedding…Gus was really listening!

Gus was able to clearly identify the type of photography they were looking for and some ideas they each had about the final collection. A few days later, I spoke with Laura and I noticed something else…she had listened to Gus! We spoke for a bit about some of the finer details and it was clear that we were all on the same page and excited about working together.

Fast-forward to March. I met with Gus & Laura (and their dog Finnegan) for their engagement photo session which took place in the afternoon at several locations Gus had pre-selected. The entire event was very comfortable, fun, and natural and I found myself enjoying their company as I captured their engagement chemistry.

Going over the images later, I was amazed by the results. Gus & Laura aren’t getting married until May; however, they have each done several things that I think any engaged couple can learn from. Here is a quick recap:

  • Talk about your expectations and listen to the feedback

  • Delegate responsibilities to help plan more effectively

  • Set clear expectations

  • Get to know the wedding professionals you hire

  • Respond to emails within 24 hours

  • Do an engagement photo session

  • Pre-select your engagement session locations…make sure they have a sentimental value

  • Keep it fun…bring the dog!

  • Being affectionate is not a crime (this is for the guys)

  • Trust the photographer's instincts…go with the flow and most importantly…have fun!
