Time Enough

I got a call this morning from a couple asking if I could officiate their wedding—this weekend. As I am writing this it is Thursday and the wedding is scheduled for Saturday afternoon—just two short days away. As luck would have it, I can fit that into my schedule, but the planning is tight…very tight.

When planning a wedding, most couples set a date and lock in the ceremony site at least a year in advance. The same goes for scheduling the caterer. Experience has shown me that it is not all that uncommon for a couple to have everything from the florist to the limo service booked before they even think of interviewing an officiant.

When I perform a ceremony, I like to make sure that my style completely fits the couple. We typically have at least two meetings prior to the wedding. In those meetings we not only create but also choreograph the ceremony. I also share tips based on things I've learned that help to keep mistakes to a minimum and help the ceremony unfold smoothly.

With sufficient time for planning, I learn who the couple is and what is important to them. I can help choose readings and actions that will highlight the meaning of the day, and make the wedding both special and memorable. More importantly, the couple can take the time they need to think about the many options I suggest and ultimately decide what they want the ceremony to look like.

My advice: Give yourself time enough.
