Imagine a perfect outdoor setting with formal gardens featuring a hundred types of roses, a small pond with swans floating, all nestled in lush rolling hills. The wedding party enters to the soothing sounds of a string quartet. The officiant welcomes the guests and begins the ceremony when suddenly the startling tune of a marching band emanates from the pocket of one of the guests.
You guessed it--a cell phone!
Not only have I officiated at weddings where cells phones rang, I have actually heard people have complete conversations during the ceremony. Cell phones are ubiquitous. It seems that everyone, young and old, carries one and chances are many guests will have neglected to turn them off.
As the officiant, I find it awkward to begin the ceremony with a directive to turn off cell phones. However, I do think the announcement must be made. Here are some ideas for getting the message out:
