Choosing the Perfect Wedding Photographer

When planning your wedding, your photographer is one of the most important vendors that you will consider. Make sure that you take your time and choose wisely. Go online and look at many photographers to get a sense of the kind of photos you like. Do you like a more posed, traditional style, a more photojournalistic (hands off approach), or a mixture of the two? Do you like artsy pictures, hand painted masterpieces, black and white or color images? Answering these questions will help direct you to the 3-4 photographers that best fit your stylistic desires.

Once you find a few photographers that you like stylistically, go more in-depth with what they offer and cost. Is it more important for you to get a CD of images and go the DIY album route, or do you want someone who will offer you a professional album? Maybe you want both??? What is your budget? Can you spend $1500, $5000 or $15,000 on your wedding pictures? Answering these questions will help you to refine and narrow down your choices so that you have only a few key photographers to interview. Interviewing many photographers is a waste of your time, gas and resources. Do the pre-work and it you save time, keep you more organized, and help keep the planning fun.

Each photographer has his/her own style. You want to hire a photographer particularly for their style. It’s an art that is unique to the photographer. Keep in mind that a photographer cannot mimic another’s work. If you show a photographer pictures and expect them to mimic that style, you are only headed for disaster. You will be unhappy and so will your photographer. Always hire a photographer because you love the pictures that he/she takes. If you do this you will be happy with your photographs.

In my opinion, photography is one of the most important aspects of your wedding. You spend month (sometimes years) tirelessly planning your day. You work to make every single detail perfect. Then the day feels like it’s gone in an instant. It’s a whirlwind of activity that flies by faster than you can imagine. Your wedding images are your archive of feelings and happenings of the day. They will be part of your past, your future, and a reminder of your love and commitment to each other.
