Tuxedos have been around since the 1800’s. A few stories surround the origination. All the same, the tuxedo is a man’s most formal attire. From weddings to promenades, from galas to red carpet events, the most rugged looking fellow can put on a tuxedo and *poof* he magically transforms into James Bond!

The etiquette of the tuxedo seem to be a complicated issue for some. However, it’s much simpler than you think. No, not all tuxedos are the same. And yes, some tuxedos are more formal than others. But with a few simple guidelines, you can overcome tuxedo intimidation. The first rule is to use suspenders. Belts are not to be worn with a tuxedo, so suspenders keep the pants from falling down. Suspenders equal function, not fashion. And to wear a cummerbund properly, keep in mind that it was originally designed to hold coins, or theater tickets. Imagine they’re still used that way and that’s how to wear a cummerbund correctly.

Think very straight and clean-cut for trousers. No cuffs at the hem allowed. Also, be sure that socks are silk and at least calf length. Nothing looks tackier than sitting down and seeing ankles right below the bottom of the pant leg.

Lapels and collars are more dependent on personal style. Some look better on men with broader shoulders. While other styles look great on men with fuller faces. Body type and face shape are the best judges on this element. Aesthetically, a bow-tie that has been hand-tied is always more elegant than a pre-tied bow tie. That art is becoming less common. If you aren’t an expert already, don’t try it out the day of the wedding. Get some help from the retailer, then practice!

The most formal style of the tuxedo calls for tails or a cutaway. The groom is sure to stand out from the other groomsmen with this fashion statement. While the groomsmen are wearing matching tuxedos, their ties and vests typically compliment those of the groom.

Follow these easy rules for men’s formal wear and understand that no matter height, weight, or build, tuxedos come in many styles. There is one that’s perfect for you! A transformation into James Bond really is just a bow-tie away!
