The history behind seemingly boring old wedding traditions is actually quite fascinating. For example, engagements of long ago were nearly as important as the wedding itself. Brides were stolen, but the bride's family insisted on being reimbursed for what was considered a working member of the family. The engagement signified the transfer of ownership from father to husband and covered a period of time where families could agree on a price of the bride. Luckily times have changed a little.
Here’s another interesting fact: Wedding rings came to symbolize eternal love because it has neither a beginning nor an ending. It grew out of ancient custom of using circlets of grass to decorate a bride's wrist and ankles. Although not required to validate a marriage under civil law, rings came to be required in Europe during the 16th century after a ruling from the Catholic Church. Today, rings are not required by law in order for marriage to be legal, but few couples wed without exchanging rings as part of the ceremony. Some traditions really do stand the test of time!
