  • Well Groomed: Final Destination

I have recently noticed a hilarious, if not somewhat perplexing trend in wedding planning: everyone, no matter where they’re getting married, announces that they are having a “destination wedding.” A friend of mine said he was invited to a destination wedding that was happening in the town where the bride, groom, and all their friends and family lived. When asked what made it a destination wedding, the groom said, “Well, it’s in a different part of the town from where we live.” Interesting.

  • Cinderella Complex?

I’m trying to quit, but I can’t stop. I used to condemn, and now I’m in it so deep that it’s starting to interfere with other important aspects of my life like my school work, my gym schedule, and getting sleep. It’s time for me to come clean. I watch We TV bridal shows.

  • Well Groomed: The Old Man and The Stamps

Last week, in my inaugural Groom Guy blog, I waxed poetic about a recent daytime wedding I attended in which the bride and groom provided sun hats for all the guests. My non-sunburned scalp is still smiling about that, but this week I wanted to go back in time to my own wedding planning. Specifically, I wanted to tell the tale of the old man and the stamps.

  • The Real Story Behind Wedding Traditions

The history behind seemingly boring old wedding traditions is actually quite fascinating. For example, engagements of long ago were nearly as important as the wedding itself. Brides were stolen, but the bride's family insisted on being reimbursed for what was considered a working member of the family. The engagement signified the transfer of ownership from father to husband and covered a period of time where families could agree on a price of the bride. Luckily times have changed a little.

  • One or Two? It's Up to You!

I just received a call from a couple planning their wedding for next Spring. (Tip: It's always good to give yourself at the very least six months to plan.) What makes this couple interesting is that they've already gotten married! Now this is not the first time I've worked with couples in this situation. The couple chose to tie the knot in a small ceremony at Burning Man with a group of like-minded friends. The ceremony was very personal and highly creative. It was meaningful, fun and memorable for them.

  • A Twelve Lemon Centerpiece

Remember the Jennifer Aniston-Vince Vaughn movie, The Break Up, where Aniston’s character, Brooke, is furious that Vaughn’s character, Gary, only brought her 3 of the 12 lemons she needed to make her 12-lemon centerpiece? Since that movie, and since seeing a friend of mine actually put lemons in a bowl and use it as table décor, the whole concept of a 12-lemon centerpiece really amuses me.

  • mywedding Ceremony: What's In A Vow?

It's been almost ten years since I performed the wedding for my sister and her husband. I remember flying in to Chicago the night before the wedding. The three of us created the ceremony in the car on the way home from the airport. Needless to say, it was a rather intense car ride! But both the ceremony and wedding reception went really smoothly. All the aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors and friends were appropriately moved by the event and by the vows we recited, it seemed as if the couple had a great foundation for a long and happy life together.

  • There's No Crying in Vera Wang

“I’ll cry if I have to wear that”. It was our second appointment at a bridesmaid dress boutique in Boston. The day officially stopped being fun for me after one of my bridesmaids gawked at a chicly modern Vera Wang dress that I adored with this retort.

I was about to learn a lesson the hard way. Early that morning, one of my bridesmaids, Mary Margaret, gave me a gentle nudge into Bridezilla territory. She looked at me with a serious face that seemed out of context at the time and said, “It’s really nice of you to let us all try on dresses, but remember, it’s your wedding and you have the final say.” Little did I know Mary Margaret’s serious tone was completely in context. I was just too naïve to hear the important part of her foreshadowing caveat.
