Ask Nicole: Inexpensive Wedding Venues

Question:

Dear Nicole,

Help! My fiancé and I are planning a small wedding with about 50 guests. We have both been married before and want something really simple. Do you have any ideas for wedding venues that will not break the bank?

Michele from Maryland

Response:

Dear Michele,

There are many choices for inexpensive wedding venues these days. I have compiled a list of ideas for you and your fiancé to consider:

  • Park: If you're getting married in the spring, summer, or fall consider getting married at a local park. Often times you can reserve a spot for free!
  • Community Center: Check out your local community centers. This is a great choice because you can have the ceremony and reception all in one place; saving money and making the affair much simpler to plan.
  • Friend's Backyard: Does anyone you know have a killer backyard? Or maybe you have a killer backyard. Start asking around to see if someone would host your wedding and reception in their garden.
  • Restaurant: Do you two have a favorite romantic eatery? Most restaurants have a "special events" room you can rent for a much smaller fee than most wedding venues. Again having the ceremony and reception saves money and weeds out unnecessary complications.
  • Eloping: This is a great choice for a simple, intimate wedding affair. Then to celebrate with your friends and family, host a backyard BBQ or cocktail party. That way you get your simple ceremony AND a chance to rejoice with your closest pals.
  • Destination Wedding Package: My personal favorite. I know it sounds expensive, but if you were already considering a honeymoon this is another way to combine wedding events. Ask your friends and family to join you at the beginning of your romantic getaway for an unfussy ceremony and celebration; then go your separate ways. It doesn't have to be elaborate. If you'll be near the beach-that's a perfect (and free) location for a simple ceremony. Then head to your hotel's lounge to celebrate! Your friends have an excuse for a vacation and you just simplified your life. How cool is that?

For Better or Worse,

Nicole
